We are excited to announce our celebrity guest emcee, Brandon Gruber!
Brandon is a talented and inspiring young man who happens to have Down syndrome. We are also excited to announce Brandon will be providing us with one of his incredible paintings for part of our Silent Auction! So get your pocket books out, you will definitely want to win one of his brilliant pieces!
Brandon experienced his first big “No” in high school after he moved. He changed “No” to “On”, as in Game On! What people on campus did not know was that Brandon was already in the Game. He was on the Santa Cruz County Youth City Council. He interned for Congressman Sam Farr. He volunteered at the Teen Kitchen Project where they prepared and delivered healthy meals to people fighting cancer. It was his visit to the UN for World Down syndrome day as a self-advocate representing Silicon Valley DS group that ultimately changed the course of his advocacy career. There he embraced self-advocacy and decided to “Change the World!”
He went back to high school and advocated to get an interview after his rejection a year prior. As a result of his grit and interview he earned a place at the table. His ASB-Leadership opportunity created a reverse inclusion movement on his campus. Brandon was voted Homecoming King, “Best Dancer” and “Most School Spirit”. The day after he graduated from high school, Brandon packed up his room and had all of his belongings in the front room labeled, “North Hollywood”, followed by emails and phone calls from moving companies and recording schools. This lone act underscored his single-minded determination to achieve his dreams and live life on his terms. Life is never dull as Brandon continues writing and reviewing his goals weekly. Brandon believes roadblocks are merely hurdles and that no matter the barrier nothing will prevent him from his dreams. His lives by one simple motto: Work Hard, Choose Kindness, Be Honest, and Be Yourself!
